With the release of Episode 8 in Season 2, Severance once again challenges its audience’s perceptions. Despite having a shorter runtime than previous episodes, this chapter offers substantial narrative depth and critical developments. That said, some viewers argue that the events could have been condensed into a 15-minute segment or merged with another episode. In this article, we’ll explore the episode’s key symbols and revelations, and uncover new clues about the mysterious past of Lumon Industries and its characters.
Cobel and Lumon’s Mysterious Chips
One of the most significant revelations in this episode is the direct link between Cobel and the chip technology used by Lumon. It’s revealed that these chips were originally her invention — a twist that adds new complexity to her character and raises many questions about her past and motivations.
The title of the episode, “Sweet With Revilm,” appears to reference chemical compounds such as diethyl ether and sulfuric acid. These allusions not only evoke the toxic and hallucinatory atmosphere of the city but also hint at the function of the chips — potentially controlling minds and emotions. The mention of sulfuric acid may even nod to Jabir ibn Hayyan, who discovered the substance, connecting the theme of chemistry with Lumon’s disturbing form of mind engineering.
The primary setting of this episode is Fogo Island, near Newfoundland, Canada. Once a fishing hub, the island now stands as a ghost town marked by signs of exploitation. The ether production plant on the island symbolizes not just labor abuse, but also seems to be directly connected to a religious cult. This group appears to use spiritual beliefs as a tool for mind control and social dominance.
The references to churches and Burt’s earlier dialogue make it clear that, in this world, religious institutions have been repurposed — not to offer spiritual guidance, but to serve oppressive ideologies.
Ice and Water: Symbols of Emotional and Mental Separation
The recurring visuals of waves crashing against rocks and chunks of ice floating in the water are strong metaphors for emotional and psychological separation. These images suggest that repressed emotions are beginning to surface. Notably, Cobel — typically cold and rational — shows brief moments of warmth and emotion in this episode.
Inhabitants of the town appear to be either addicted to ether or mentally enslaved by the cult’s influence. A new character named Cece seems to remain loyal to the group, playing an active role in maintaining its oppressive structure.
Ether plays a central role in this episode — not only as an anesthetic but also as a subtle instrument of abuse, mind control, and even the fabrication of romantic myths.
Love Story or Fabricated Narrative?
The tale of the factory’s founder and his wife may not be the love story it appears to be. Evidence suggests that the founder may have used ether to sedate and exploit the woman, later repackaging their relationship as a romantic legend for public consumption.
One emerging theory is that Lumon is using ether in its quest to develop a drug for immortality. Town residents appear to experience health improvements or emotional relief from ether, but this is likely part of a larger project aimed at eliminating pain, emotion, and ultimately, human identity.
Later in the episode, we learn that Cobel attended a special school — one where the new intern Huang is currently enrolled. The institution appears to have identified and trained gifted children from a young age to eventually serve Lumon. Although these children were recognized as the city’s elite, any invention or success they achieved was claimed by the company — a chilling reflection of a modern form of intellectual slavery.
Certain aspects of Episode 8 draw disturbing parallels to Nazi ideology. Lumon’s use of science for oppression, mental engineering, the suppression of emotion, and the creation of a compliant, identity-stripped society are all themes that bear a haunting resemblance to fascist systems of control.
Despite its brief runtime, Episode 8 of Severance Season 2 delivers crucial information. From Cobel’s shadowy past to Lumon’s ethically dubious projects on Fogo Island, the episode provides a clearer — yet still unsettling — view of the series’ overarching world. It sets the stage for future twists and prepares the audience for the emotional and psychological revelations yet to come.
